Chapter Twelve

The following morning, I take Hans and Susan out for a spot of breakfast in Tobermory. We discuss our next moves and I explain that Hans needs to go and pick up some surveillance from that house rather than anyone go back in again. ‘I’ll try and keep an eye on Mr. Doolan,’ I say, ‘so you can go to the house, see if you can get on to the phone lines or anything of the mobile connections, just get me anything to go on.’

‘Am I stuck with the boys in the fishing boat again?’ says Susan.

I nod my head. ‘Absolutely, it hasn’t come up with anything yet, but they will move. We know they’ve got something stored on Gometra. I’m thinking that might be their place for the stash until they can sell it and I’m wondering how much they know. Are they able to sell it? So far, we have a woman who runs another woman off for photographs with Mr. Doolan. We have a lot of boys on a boat who are burying something in the middle of the night, basically drugs, but we have no way of knowing where they’re getting them from.

‘We don’t have all of the pieces at the moment and we must get them, which is why Hans needs to do surveillance as I reckon that woman is a drug dealer. She’s got all the hallmarks of it, the surveillance systems, the guards around the property. How many other places up here have guards? Next to none and guards in the quiet, not on the door properly. They weren’t that easy to spot. I’d also say the house is maybe four or five years old, very new-built, small but modern. Maybe somebody trying out a new line, muscling in on the area, and they certainly packed weapons.’

‘Wouldn’t the gunshots have alerted police or somebody last night?’

‘No, Susan,’ I say, ‘people out here, hunting, shooting this, shooting that, you can explain it away far too easily.’

We head off on our separate ways, Susan’s staying on the bay at Tobermory because the boat’s still there. Hans sets off to do some undercover work and pick out more communications and I drive back to watch the Doolan house. I’m on a walk around and I realize that the equipment in the copse has all been taken back inside. There’s obviously a special shoot set up for when Annie Doolan wasn’t about. Doolan himself stays in all morning and through my binoculars, I can see him up in his office. Otherwise, there isn’t much about. At one o’clock he heads out and I follow him in the car back to Tobermory. He’s in a pub and sits down to a quiet lunch while I— sporting my extra arm—watch him from across the bar. As I’m sitting there, I’m joined by a woman and I recognize the blonde hair and the scar on the side of the face. ‘Good afternoon, Miss Hunstanton,’ I say. ‘What brings you
